Make connections that matter.
We believe that sharing stories and conversations over a simple coffee can change lives. Cafés con Abuelos was born in Barcelona, inspired by a love for community and a desire to bring people together.
💌 Why it started.
I moved to Barcelona from London and, while I love this city, I miss my family deeply. Watching elderly people here living their everyday lives reminded me of home — and inspired me to connect with them.
🌍 The idea.
Barcelona is full of expats from all over the world, each with different levels of Spanish. Many of us just need practice, and many older people simply want company and a friendly chat. We thought — why not bring those two groups together?
✨ Our mission.
Cafés con Abuelos aims to combat loneliness among elderly residents while helping expats improve their Spanish in a warm, supportive way. A simple conversation over a café can create meaningful friendships.
☕ How it works.
Once a month, we gather in the park or at a local café. Elderly volunteers and expats are paired for relaxed conversation — no pressure, just connection. Everyone leaves a little lighter, a little happier.
💛 Why it matters.
Loneliness is one of the biggest challenges facing both older people and new arrivals in a city. By sharing time together, we build a stronger, kinder Barcelona.
🤝 Support us.
Cafés con Abuelos is completely free to join. We rely 100% on donations to keep our monthly meetups running. Every coffee shared, every smile exchanged, is made possible thanks to the generosity of people like you.
